Micca EP600 1080P Full HD Network Digital Media Player

I bought this primarily as a local media player, so I didn’t mind that it does not have access to Netflix or Amazon VOD. I did a quick look through the Internet section and there’s access to the usual suspects: Youtube, Flikr, Picasa, and a large selection of what I’d consider third tier content: Internet radio, video blogs, tech shows, news clips, etc. There is a huge channel for what appears to be Chinese online video content with a lot of sub layers of menus. In summary, by itself the EP600 won’t be enough for someone looking for Netflix/Hulu/Pandora and other such “premium content” services. A Roku box will still be best for those types of streamed content based on forum discussions I’ve combed through. However, the EP600 does support local content much better than Roku.

The EP600 has a web browser but it’s a mixed bag. You really need to connect a mouse and keyboard to the player to use it effectively, and even then it is kind of slow. It also does not support flash, which is a major drawback for any web browser. Other manufacturers small and large have tried to bring web browsers to media boxes like this, I have yet to see one that works well. It’s nice that the EP600 has a browser, but it will make you wish for your computer if you are doing anything more complicated than a Google search.

I also briefly tried the local media sharing capability of the EP600, using my Windows 7 PC to read/write files to a 2TB 3.5″ drive I had attached to the EP600′s SATA connector. I was getting speeds of about 10MB/s, which is about twice as fast as the older generation players with 100mbps LAN connections. I think the bottleneck is probably the processor and memory since the hard drive and SATA interface can handle much faster data rates. My network switch did indicate that it had a Gigabit connection with the EP600 so that part of it looks to be true to the player’s specification. Read more »
